Starbucks Gwangjang Market – A Unique Café Experience Inside Seoul’s Traditional Market

Even as a Seoul local, I rarely come across a Starbucks like this one.

Right in the heart of Gwangjang Market, one of the city’s most iconic traditional markets,

you’ll find the newly opened Starbucks Gwangjang Market Branch.

Opened in late May 2025, this store is more than just a café —

it’s a cultural space that blends the past and the present in a way only Seoul can.

I had been debating what topic to choose for my very first English blog post,

and when I heard that a new Starbucks had opened inside the now world-famous Gwangjang Market — featured on Netflix’s “Street Food Asia” — the decision was made.

A Historic Market at the Heart of the Joseon Capital

Gwangjang Market isn’t just a typical street market.

It sits just outside what used to be Dongdaemun, the eastern gate of Hanyang — the old capital of the Joseon dynasty, now known as Seoul.

For generations, this market has been a bustling hub for hanbok fabrics, silk, and street food vendors.

Located near the old downtown area of Jongno,

it’s surrounded by specialty alleys dedicated to jewelry, watches, pharmacies, and more —

many of which have remained unchanged for decades.

The arrival of a global brand like Starbucks in such a historically dense location carries more than commercial significance.

From the architecture and interior design to the menu and limited-edition merchandise,

everything here has been carefully tailored to reflect the culture and identity of the surrounding area.

As you step inside, the first thing you’ll notice is the minimalist cold brew stand near the entrance.

It’s designed for speed and convenience, catering to the fast-paced rhythm of the market.

The overall aesthetic evokes a modern pub subtly integrated into the fabric of Gwangjang Market.

2nd Floor – Main Counter & Mural Gallery

The second floor serves as the heart of the store.

Here you’ll find the main bar counter, where not only coffee is brewed, but also craft beers and cocktails are freshly prepared on-site.

During the day, it’s a calm and relaxed space for a cup of coffee.

As evening falls, it transforms into a cozy lounge with a more atmospheric vibe.

The window-side seats are especially appealing —

the large open central windows offer a clear view overlooking Gwangjang Market, allowing you to observe the bustling energy of the market below.

On one wall hangs a large illustrated mural that captures the daily life of Gwangjang Market.

From cheerful vendors and colorful street food to the vibrant flow of visitors,

the mural is filled with warm tones and lively lines that bring the market’s charm to life.

This wall has quickly become a popular photo spot,

with many visitors posting their snapshots to social media after capturing the unique vibe.

More than just decoration,

the mural feels like a modern reinterpretation of Korean folk art, visually narrating the market culture with a contemporary twist.

It’s a brilliant example of Starbucks Korea’s thoughtful design approach and cultural sensitivity.

As Gwangjang Market and the nearby Dongdaemun area are both well known for their vibrant textile and fashion industries, another wall is lined with colorful spools of thread — a creative nod to the neighborhood’s rich tailoring heritage.

Starbucks Gwangjang Market 3F Rooftop Terrace

3rd Floor – Rooftop Terrace Lit with Vintage Bulbs

Up on the third floor is a rooftop terrace,

a refreshing open-air space that balances relaxation and emotion in equal parts.

Wooden deck floors, potted greenery, and simple wooden furniture create a harmonious, laid-back setting.

The red brick wall topped with a Korean-language Starbucks sign adds a uniquely local touch, perfect for photos.

When the sun goes down, the space comes to life —

vintage-style filament bulbs suspended from above start to glow one by one,

casting a soft, romantic light that feels almost surreal in the context of a traditional market.

In daylight, the terrace feels alive with energy.

At night, it becomes an unexpectedly dreamy corner of the city.

If you’re visiting Seoul, this hidden rooftop gem is a place you’ll want to experience firsthand.

Starbucks Gwangjang Market Signature Menu – Limited Editions You Can Only Find Here

At the Starbucks Gwangjang Market, you’ll find a collection of exclusive items that are only available at this specific location.

One of the most popular offerings is a box set featuring three types of cake, along with traditional-style Korean twisted bread and doughnuts —

a combination that has become a hit since the store first opened.

Each cake is artistically designed, inspired by hanbok (traditional Korean attire) and fine silk fabric patterns.

It’s a creative blend of Korea’s rich textile heritage with modern dessert aesthetics.

The bread selection, on the other hand, is made up of baked goods that have been long beloved in Korean traditional markets —

very different in both style and taste from those found in typical Western-style bakeries.

Unfortunately, when I visited, the entire set was already sold out.

To my delight, however, I was still able to try a drink that’s only available here:

the Golden Mandarin Hop Fizzio.

Golden Mandarin Hop Fizzio – Non-Alcoholic, Caffeine-Free, and Seriously Refreshing

The Fizzio series at Starbucks is a line of non-alcoholic sparkling beverages.

Among them, the Golden Mandarin Hop Fizzio stands out as a unique blend of flavors —

combining the natural sweetness of Jeju-grown mandarins with herbal notes reminiscent of hops.

It’s not bitter at all, but the hop-inspired herbal aroma gives the drink a subtle, beer-like finish.

Despite being both alcohol-free and caffeine-free,

its crisp carbonation and balanced flavor make it feel just as satisfying as a cold brew on a hot day.

✔ Carbonation: Medium

✔ Flavor Notes: Jeju mandarin & hop-like herbal tones

✔ Texture: Light, clean, and smooth

✔ Overall: A refreshing non-alcoholic alternative to beer — perfect for warm weather

Beer and Cocktails? Starbucks Gwangjang Market Does Things Differently

One of the most exciting and unique aspects of this location is that it serves both beer and cocktails —

something you won’t often see at other Starbucks locations.

While a few other Starbucks evening stores exist in Seoul,

the Gwangjang Market store stands out with its localized concept and trendy, culturally rich atmosphere.

The house craft beer here is called Byeoldabang Lager.

The name “Byeoldabang” is a clever mash-up:

byeol means “star” in Korean, and dabang is a retro term for an old-style Korean café.

It was a nickname created by Korean fans and later adopted officially for the beer.

This lager-style craft beer is brewed by a craft brewery under Korea’s Shinsegae Group.

It features a subtle tartness with mellow notes of mango and tropical fruit,

favoring a soft, fruity profile over the bitter intensity of traditional hoppy beers.

It’s an approachable beer that even newcomers can enjoy,

and especially refreshing on a hot summer day.

While the official description mentions a hint of coffee aroma,

I personally didn’t pick up on it during my tasting.

✔ ABV: 4.1%

✔ Flavor Notes: Mango & tropical fruit

✔ Body: Light and smooth

✔ Best For: Beer beginners or anyone seeking a light, refreshing summer drink

And yes — they serve cocktails too.

The menu includes Pina Colada, Rum Tonic, and Cosmopolitan,

all of which are Bacardi-based cocktails made fresh at the counter while you watch.

It’s a small but fun touch that brings a bit of bar-style flair into the Starbucks experience.

More Korean-Only Starbucks Drinks – All in One Place

This store doesn’t just offer one or two local specialties —

it brings together all the signature Korean-only Starbucks drinks in one spot.

Some of these items are available at select locations across Korea,

but this store features the entire lineup under one roof.

It feels like the menu was thoughtfully curated with international travelers in mind,

making it the perfect place to explore the full range of Korean-inspired Starbucks creations.

One standout is the Honey Hotteok Latte,

inspired by hotteok, a beloved Korean street snack often sold in traditional markets.

While hotteok is sometimes described as a “Korean pancake filled with honey,”

it’s actually filled with melted brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped nuts — warm, sticky, and comforting.

The latte captures the toasty sweetness of this winter favorite in a cup.

Another must-try is the Makgeolli Cream Cold Brew,

featuring a light, tangy cream reminiscent of makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine.

Though alcohol-free, its soft, fermented aroma and flavor give it an intriguing twist.

You can also try the Injeolmi Cream Latte,

inspired by injeolmi, a chewy rice cake coated with roasted soybean powder.

This latte mimics the nutty, earthy flavor and adds a rich cream topping for extra indulgence.

For green tea lovers, don’t miss the Jeju Matcha series,

made with matcha sourced from Jeju Island — Korea’s most renowned tea-growing region.

Smooth, earthy, and naturally sweet, these drinks offer a distinctly Korean take on matcha.

Where Tradition and a Global Brand Coexist

The Starbucks Gwangjang Market store is a place where Seoul’s past and present, tradition and modernity, local culture and global branding meet in perfect harmony.

More than just a café, it feels like a cultural crossroads —

a space where you can sip a cup of coffee and soak in the layered stories of the city.

If you’re planning a trip to Seoul and want to experience more than just the usual tourist spots,

if you’re looking to feel the rhythm and soul of the city itself,

this Starbucks is worth a visit.

For those curious about what lies beyond the surface of K-culture,

and eager to discover the real “Seoulness” that defines the city,

a quiet moment at this hidden gem inside Gwangjang Market might just be the perfect start.
